The novel would take eight years to write because Blake became so immersed in the research, finding one fact leading to another as she attempted to become part of a time some 70 years ago.
But besides weaving an era into a story, Blake also weaves the three separate lives of very different women – Iris James, the postmistress of Franklin, Massachusetts; Frankie Bard, a reporter who covered the Blitz in London in the early days of World War II; and Emma Fitch, a newly married bride of a doctor.
