 and one of my favorites to read. Add to that his charismatic personality, his view of the world and his sense of humor (or maybe it was how he voiced it).
I became enamored when one of my English teachers challenged the class to follow his views on writing with adjectives...actually precluding them and showing us how much stronger our prose could be without words like really, very and 'groovy' (it was the 60's).

His novels offer a glimpse into the late 1800s and speak out about the things going on during that time. Although some of his books are considered controversial and are often challenged on banned book lists there is no denying the importance of his work.
