Just Finished: Scraps of Paper-Revised Author's Edition [Kindle Edition] by Kathryn Meyer Griffith

Not exactly an historical mystery but the old house Abigail is 'fixing up' does have a history.

We follow Abigail as she moves to a new town to start a new career and new life after finding herself a widow. In the small town she falls in love with, we meet her new friends and the town's eccentric residents. As she starts rejuvenating her new home, we are drawn into the secrets involved with the disappearance of the previous occupants.
When Abigail finds 30 year old messages written by the children and secreted in the house she can't help but be wonder why they left. Soon she is looking for more 'messages', talking to long time townies and following clues.

Readers also won't be able to resist hungrily turning the pages to follow Abigail as she untangles the long kept secrets, riddles and confidences to find out what really happened to the family.

Scraps of Paper turned out to be a compelling and entertaining read.
